چکیده

Objective: To compare superparamagnetic iron oxide-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging with 5-phase computed tomography in the detection and characterisation of focal liver lesions. Patients and Methods: We prospectively performed 5-phase computed tomography scans followed by magnetic resonance imaging of the liver with superparamagnetic iron oxide magnetic resonance contrast medium in patients with focal liver lesions. A total of 18 patients were included, 11 male and seven female. Both dynamic and equilibrium phases magnetic resonance imaging were done. Lesion enhancement and number of lesions seen in each phase was then analysed. Results: Thirty four lesions were detected and characterised. These comprised metastases (one), hepatocellular carcinomas (seven), cysts (two), haemangiomas (ten), lesions secondary to arterioportal shunting (eleven), and ablated lesions (three). There was no statistically significant difference in lesion detection and characterisation of focal lesions on superparamagnetic iron oxide magnetic resonance imaging. Conclusion: Superparamagnetic iron oxide-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging is comparable to 5-phase computed tomography of the liver in the detection and characterisation of focal liver lesions.

Resovist-Enhanced MRI for Preoperative Assessment of Colorectal Hepatic Metastases

Extensive preoperative assessment of hepatic metastases is required in colon cancer patients. We report a case in whom the preoperative investigation by ultrasound scan and contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed numerous cystic lesions of the liver, suspicious of von Meyenburg complex. Magnetic resonance and magnetic resonance cholangiographic images demonstrated typical features of von...

Contrast-enhanced FDG-PET/CT vs. SPIO-enhanced MRI vs. FDG-PET vs. CT in patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer: a prospective study with intraoperative confirmation.

BACKGROUND The choice of imaging before liver surgery is debated regarding the use of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, computed tomography (CT), and positron emission tomography (PET). No studies have compared contrast-enhanced PET/CT with superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO)-enhanced MR imaging. PURPOSE To compare PET/CT with superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO)-enhanced MR imaging, PET, and C...

Detection of Small Hypervascular Hepatocellular Carcinomas in Cirrhotic Patients: Comparison of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide-Enhanced MR Imaging with Dual-Phase Spiral CT

OBJECTIVE To compare the performance of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO)-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) maging at 1.5T and dual-phase spiral computed tomography (CT) for the depiction of small hypervascular hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-three patients with 70 small nodular HCCs (5-20 mm; mean, 13.7 mm) were examined. Diagnosis was based on the results of s...

Characterization of focal liver lesions using ferucarbotran-enhanced liver MRI: efficacy of percentage signal intensity loss for detecting nodules within diffuse liver disease

Introduction: Early detection of HCC is important in improving patient outcome and decision making in therapeutic strategies. Many authors reported superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is effective for the differentiation of benign and malignant hepatic lesions and the percentage of signal intensity loss (PSIL) might reflect Kupffer-cell numbers in tumor...

ANALYTICAL STUDY OF EFFECT OF BILAYER INORGANIC AND ORGANIC COATING AROUND THE IRON OXIDE NANOPARTICLES ON MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING CONTRAST

Background & Aims: In recent years, iron oxide nanoparticles have been used in contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging for diagnosing a wide range of diseases. In order to provide biocompatibility and prevent the toxicity of the nanoparticles, using organic or inorganic coating around these nanoparticles is important for their application. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect...
